Wann ist die beste Zeit für eine Besteigung des Mount Kilimanjaro?

15 July 2026 8 Min. Lesezeit

Kilimanjaro can be climbed all year, but two dry windows give the most stable weather and the highest summit-success rates: January to mid-March, and June to October.

Because the mountain sits three degrees south of the Equator, temperature barely changes month to month — what changes is rainfall and cloud. Choose your month for the precipitation, not the thermometer.

January to mid-March

Warm, clear and quieter than the July–September rush. Mornings are usually cloudless with superb views of Mawenzi. You can get light snow on the summit crater, which makes for spectacular photos but means good gloves matter. This is the best window if you want the mountain without the queues.

Mid-March to May: the long rains

Daily rain in the forest zone, slippery trails and low visibility. Some operators discount heavily. If you must climb in this window, use Rongai — it approaches from the drier northern side in the rain shadow — and add a day for the extra effort.

June to October: the main season

Dry, cold and reliable. Nights at Barafu can drop to −7 °C and summit-night wind chill to −20 °C, but trails are firm and skies are clear. July to September is the busiest period on Machame and Marangu — Lemosho and Rongai stay noticeably quieter. Book three to six months ahead for these dates.

November to mid-December: the short rains

Short afternoon showers rather than all-day rain, with generally clear mornings. Prices and crowds are at their lowest, and northern routes stay comparatively dry. A good option for experienced hikers who are comfortable with wet forest days.

Should you summit on a full moon?

A full-moon summit means enough natural light to walk without relying on your head torch and dramatic views of the glaciers. Those dates fill first — tell us early if you want one and we will time the itinerary so your summit night falls within two days of the full moon.

Match the month to the route

  • Peak dry season, want quiet: Lemosho 8 days or Rongai 7 days
  • Peak dry season, want value: Machame 7 days
  • Rainy or shoulder months: Rongai (northern rain shadow), 6 or 7 days
  • Cold sleeper or want a bed each night: Marangu 6 days with hut accommodation

Häufig gestellte Fragen

Which month has the highest summit success?

September and January consistently show the best conditions in our own records — dry, stable and clear. Route length matters far more than the month, though: our 8-day Lemosho climbs summit at around 97 %, versus roughly 85 % for 6-day itineraries.

How cold does it get?

Base camps sit between 0 °C and 10 °C at night. Summit night at Uhuru Peak ranges from −7 °C to −18 °C before wind chill.

Wie weit im Voraus sollte ich buchen?

Three to six months for June–October and Christmas; six to eight weeks is usually enough for other months.
