The Best Months For The Northern Safari Circuit

2 July 2026 9 min read

Tanzania's northern circuit is good all year — but where the wildlife is, and how easy it is to see, changes dramatically by month. The Great Migration moves in a clockwise loop through the Serengeti ecosystem, while Tarangire and Ngorongoro follow their own rhythms.

Here is what each month actually looks like on the ground.

January to February — the calving season

Around half a million wildebeest calves are born on the short-grass plains of Ndutu and the southern Serengeti in a six-week window. That concentration of vulnerable young draws lions, cheetahs and hyenas, making this arguably the best period of the year for predator sightings. Skies are clear between short showers and the light is superb.

March to May — the green season

The long rains bring lush landscapes, dramatic skies and the lowest prices of the year. Grass is tall so spotting takes patience, and some tracks become tricky, but resident game in Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara remains excellent and migratory birds arrive in force. Great value if you accept some rain.

June to July — dry season begins

Grass shortens, water sources dry up and animals concentrate. The migration builds up in the western corridor, where Grumeti River crossings can occur. Tarangire begins its best months, with huge elephant herds gathering along the river. Weather is dry, sunny and cool at night.

August to September — the Mara River crossings

The iconic moment: herds massing on the northern Serengeti's riverbanks before plunging across crocodile-filled water. Crossings are unpredictable and can involve long waits, so give yourself three or more nights in the north. This is peak season — northern Serengeti camps sell out six to twelve months ahead.

October to December

October is a quiet, dry sweet spot as the herds drift south. The short rains arrive in November, greening the plains without seriously disrupting travel, and Tarangire and Ngorongoro stay reliably strong throughout. December brings newborn plains game and a festive-season price rise in the last two weeks.

Ngorongoro and Tarangire are year-round

The Crater holds an estimated 25,000 large animals inside its walls all year, including black rhino, so it never depends on the migration. Tarangire peaks from June to October, when elephant herds concentrate along the river.

How many days do you need?

  • 3 days — Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara; ideal after a Kilimanjaro climb
  • 4 days — adds a night in the central Serengeti
  • 5 days — proper Serengeti time plus the Crater; our most popular safari
  • 6 days or more — northern Serengeti for the river crossings, or add Lake Eyasi and cultural visits
Book crossings early

If your trip depends on the Mara River crossings in August or September, secure camps at least six months ahead — the good northern camps are the first thing to disappear each year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the migration guaranteed in a given month?

No — the herds follow rainfall, not a calendar. The pattern above is reliable in broad terms, and our guides track daily movements to position you in the right area.

Is malaria a concern?

Risk is low in the highlands and higher in the low-lying parks during the rains. Take prophylaxis on your doctor's advice and use repellent at dawn and dusk.

Can I combine safari with Zanzibar?

Yes — a short flight from Arusha or the Serengeti. Zanzibar is best from June to October and December to February; March to May is its wettest period.
