Why insurance is required
Our trips are adventurous in nature and take place in remote areas — on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, in the national parks of the Northern Circuit, and along the coast of Zanzibar. While we plan every detail carefully, a medical emergency, a missed flight or a cancellation can still happen, and the cost of a mountain rescue, clinic visit or early return home can be very high.
For this reason, comprehensive travel and medical insurance, including emergency evacuation, is required for all trips booked with Tanzania Travelers. You will be asked to confirm your cover before departure.
What your policy should cover
- Emergency medical and evacuation. Treatment and transport for illness or injury, including evacuation from the mountain or a remote park to a suitable hospital, and repatriation to your home country if needed.
- High-altitude trekking. If you are climbing Kilimanjaro, your policy must cover trekking and emergency evacuation up to 6,000 m (about 19,700 ft) — Uhuru Peak stands at 5,895 m, and not all standard policies cover altitude above 4,000 m. When comparing providers, confirm the altitude ceiling before you buy.
- Trip cancellation and curtailment. Reimbursement of non-refundable costs if you have to cancel before departure or cut your trip short.
- Lost, delayed or damaged baggage and gear. Cover for your equipment and personal effects, including delays on international or domestic flights.
- Flight delays and missed connections. Additional costs when flights to or within Tanzania are delayed or changed.
- Personal liability. Protection in the unlikely event that you cause injury or damage to a third party.
Arranging your insurance
We recommend arranging your policy as soon as your booking is confirmed, so you are protected against cancellation from that point onward. Travel insurance is widely available from insurers in your home country; choose a provider that offers 24-hour emergency assistance and accepts adventure travel at altitude.
Please read the terms of your policy carefully. Confirm the altitude limit, the activities included, and the procedure for making a claim before you travel. Keep your insurer's 24-hour assistance number and your policy number with your travel documents.
Recommended insurance providers
Regarding mountaineering and travel insurance, we highly recommend Global Rescue (www.globalrescue.com) for their comprehensive policies and exceptional service. They are widely regarded as the best choice for mountaineers.
However, you may also consider World Nomads (www.worldnomads.com) or explore other options such as Travel Guard, Seven Corners, IMG Global, etc. We advise choosing a policy that best suits your needs and preferences.
Whichever provider you choose for a Kilimanjaro climb, confirm in writing that the policy covers trekking and emergency evacuation up to 6,000 m before you travel.
On the mountain and on safari
- Carry a copy of your insurance certificate and the emergency assistance number with you, and share the details with us before departure.
- On Kilimanjaro, our crew carries a first-aid kit and a pulse oximeter, and we monitor climbers for altitude-related illness. In a serious emergency a stretter or helicopter evacuation may be required; the decision is made by our senior guide.
- Keep all receipts, medical reports and written confirmation of expenses — your insurer will usually ask for them when you make a claim.
