Tanzania is a year-round destination, but the two dry seasons — June to October and January to February — give the best safaris, the safest Kilimanjaro trails and the finest beach weather. The only window we advise against is the long rains of mid-March to May.
Dry skies across the whole country. Peak wildlife viewing, the safest mountain conditions and warm, breezy beach weather on Zanzibar.
Rainy seasons
Mar – May · Nov
November's short rains are brief and come with low prices and empty parks. The long rains of March–May are the one period to plan around.
Temperature
Stable year-round
Tanzania sits near the equator, so the calendar changes rainfall, not heat. Choose your month for rain, crowds and wildlife events — not the thermometer.

The four seasons
Tanzania's seasons, explained
Two dry seasons, two rainy seasons. Understanding them is the whole secret to timing a Tanzanian trip well.
Best timeJune – October
The long dry season — the classic time to visit
Cool, dry and sunny. Wildlife concentrates around rivers and waterholes, the great migration crosses the Mara River in the northern Serengeti, Kilimanjaro's trails are firm and clear, and Zanzibar is warm with a gentle breeze. The trade-off: peak prices and peak crowds, especially July–September.
Best timeJanuary – February
The short dry season — calving season in the Serengeti
Hot and dry between the rains. Around 8,000 wildebeest calves are born daily on the southern Serengeti plains in February, drawing intense predator action. Kilimanjaro is warm and clear, and Zanzibar is at its hottest. Our favourite window for photographers.
ShoulderNovember – mid December
The short rains — green, quiet and good value
Brief afternoon showers refresh the landscape without ruining game drives. The migration sweeps back south, crowds are thin and many lodges drop their rates. A smart choice if you are flexible and do not mind the occasional downpour.
AvoidMid March – May
The long rains — the only window we advise against
Tanzania's heaviest rainfall. Safari tracks turn to mud, some camps close, Kilimanjaro's lower trails are slippery and visibility is poor, and the coast sees daily showers. Unless you are an experienced traveller chasing solitude, plan around these months.
Timing by experience
The best month depends on what you are doing
A Kilimanjaro climb, a Serengeti safari and a Zanzibar beach week each have their own ideal windows. Our detailed guides break them down.
Climbing Kilimanjaro
Jan – mid Mar & Jun – Oct
Two dry windows give the safest trails and highest summit success rates. Route choice and trip length matter more than the month.
For an all-round trip combining safari, Kilimanjaro and the beach, June to October is the most reliable window — dry, sunny and superb for wildlife. January and February are equally good if you want the wildebeest calving season and warmer climbing conditions.
When is the worst time to visit Tanzania?
Mid-March to May is the long-rain season. Safari tracks get muddy, some camps close, Kilimanjaro's trails are wet and visibility is poor. It is the only period we actively advise clients to avoid.
When is the best time for a safari and Kilimanjaro in one trip?
June–October or January–February. Both windows pair dry Kilimanjaro trails with peak safari conditions, and you can add Zanzibar at the end. In the dry season, climb first and safari second — you will appreciate the recovery.
When can I see the Great Migration river crossings?
The dramatic Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti usually happen from July to October. The herds are in the western corridor in June and return south through November–December. Exact timing shifts with the rains each year — tell us your dates and we will position you accordingly.
Is Tanzania worth visiting in the rainy season?
November's short rains are very manageable — brief afternoon showers, lush scenery, few crowds and lower prices. The long rains (mid-March–May) are harder: some lodges close and game viewing is difficult, though birdwatching is exceptional.
How far in advance should I book?
For July–September and the Christmas period, book 6–9 months ahead — the best camps and full-moon summit dates sell out first. Shoulder and green-season trips can usually be arranged 6–8 weeks out.
